Zaxxon

The first 3 dimensional isometric game, which used raster graphics.

The isometric perspective had to be chosen in between across and straight down, in concession to the raster monitor, which could only set up the graphics one image at a time.

Zaxxon is an arcade shoot-'em-up. In it the player pilots a ship through Space Fortresses to find and destroy the Zaxxon robot. The fortresses have force-fields and walls which must be avoided, as well as gun turrets and missile silos. The most hazardous part is definitely locating the narrow gap between the walls and force-fields, especially as this gap narrows at later levels.

Zaxxon's raster graphics gave the arcade game a detailed 3 dimensional terrain, with the possibility of animated 3 dimensional explosions.
