PONG

The ur-arcade game.

Pong had only two instructions: DEPOSIT QUARTER and AVOID MISSING BALL FOR HIGH SCORE. Pong was a monolithic paddle game - and started the arcade revolution.

The original Atari Pong was a small 2 foot high unit that was placed on a barrel at Andy Capps bar. It led to a phone call from the owner of the bar to Atari, telling them their game was broke. Allan Alcorn, the designer, came to examine the machine, and found that the coin mechanism had overflown with quarters and short-circuited. From there on it was history.

Many versions of this game have been developed since.
